Every Tidepiece began its working life as an American industrial signal display, a machine built in 2011 to carry urgent words across factory floors and federal installations. Retired and bound for the landfill, they were reclaimed instead.

In Wilmington, North Carolina, each one is stripped to the chassis, completely refurbished and tested, and reprogrammed end to end with custom code, every word it ever carried replaced with one new instruction: say nothing. Show the sea.

What returns is functional artwork. The instrument renders twenty-four hours of your local tide as a single line of light of 1,536 points, rising and falling as the water does: the twelve hours just past, the twelve still to come, and a thin red line marking now. No screen to wake, no app to open, no words at all. You read it the way you read a clock face: at a glance, from across the room.

There are thirty-one. There will not be more, and each one knows its place among them.

Thirty-one is not a marketing number; it is the number reclaimed, and the number there will ever be. The edition closes when the thirty-first instrument leaves the bench.

And each one knows which of the thirty-one it is. Plug it in and it says so before it says anything else: its own number, held on the face, then given back to the water. Nothing is engraved on the case and no certificate arrives in the box. The instrument simply tells you, every time you wake it.

Each Tidepiece arrives already commissioned to its shore: we set it to the tide station nearest your water, and from the moment it is plugged in, it keeps itself current. Choosing or changing the shore yourself takes a minute at set.tidepiece.com. After five years, the service renews simply.
